چکیده

In this paper, we develop and apply Bayesian inference for an extended NelsonSiegel (1987) term structure model capturing interest rate risk. The so-called Stochastic Volatility Nelson-Siegel (SVNS) model allows for stochastic volatility in the underlying yield factors. We propose a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to efficiently estimate the SVNS model using simulation-based inference. Applying the SVNS model to monthly U.S. zero-coupon yields, we find significant evidence for time-varying volatility in the yield factors. This is mostly true for the level and slope volatility revealing also the highest persistence. It turns out that the inclusion of stochastic volatility improves the model’s goodness-of-fit and clearly reduces the forecasting uncertainty particularly in low-volatility periods. The proposed approach is shown to work efficiently and is easily adapted to alternative specifications of dynamic factor models revealing (multivariate) stochastic volatility.

A Note on the Nelson–siegel Family

We study a problem posed in Björk and Christensen (1999): does there exist any nontrivial interest rate model which is consistent with the Nelson–Siegel family? They show that within the HJM framework with deterministic volatility structure the answer is no. In this paper we give a generalized version of this result including stochastic volatility structure. For that purpose we introduce the cl...

Simulating Exchange Rate Volatility in Iran Using Stochastic Differential ‎Equations‎

‎The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the exchange rate volatility in Iran in the time period between 2011/11/27 and 2017/02/25 on a daily basis. As a tradable asset and as an important and effective economic  variable, exchange rate plays a decisive role in the economy of a country. In a successful economic management, the modeling and prediction of the exchange rate volatility is esse...

BUGS for a Bayesian Analysis of Stochastic Volatility Models

This paper reviews the general Bayesian approach to parameter estimation in stochastic volatility models with posterior computations performed by Gibbs sampling. The main purpose is to illustrate the ease with which the Bayesian stochastic volatility model can now be studied routinely via BUGS (Bayesian Inference Using Gibbs Sampling), a recently developed, user-friendly, and freely available s...

Bayesian Inference for Nonlinear and Non-gaussian Stochastic Volatility Model with Leverage Effect

Stochastic volatility (SV) models provide useful tools to describe the evolution of asset returns, which exhibit time-varying volatility. This paper extends a basic SV model to capture a leverage effect, a fat-tailed distribution of asset returns and a nonlinear relationship between the current volatility and the previous volatility process. The Bayesian approach with the Markov chain Monte Car...

Chapter on Bayesian Inference for Stochastic Volatility Modeling

This chapter reviews the major contributions over the last two decades to the literature on the Bayesian analysis of stochastic volatility (SV) models (univariate and multivariate). Bayesian inference is performed by tailoring Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) or sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) schemes that take into account the specific modeling characteristics. The popular univariate stochastic vo...
